Private Residences by Small Luxury Hotels of the World

France, Courchevel 1850 Chalet Timeless

Direct access to the Cospillot piste and only five minutes from the main La Croisette ski lift station

Two steps from big sister SLH property Hôtel Le Strato, Chalet Timeless offers a full hotel service, in a traditional-style Savoyard residence. Created for Laurent Boix-Vives who was head of Rossignol, the two suite, 140 square metre residence is named after the legendary Strato ski, which carried many Olympic and World Champions to victory. The décor has contemporary furnishings and antiques, providing an eclectic mix of elegance, reminders of its sporting heritage and absolute comfort: it is the work of Pierre Dubois and Aimé Cécil, of designer label Les Héritiers. The ambiance is therefore above all elegantly understated.

Thanks to a covered path with direct access to the hotel, it is easy to enjoy the facilities on offer there. The spa is over 800 square metres and has an amazing panoramic view from the large bay windows. There is an impressive swimming pool, hammam, Jacuzzi and four treatment rooms, decorated in slate and beautiful wood. The boot room has its own Champagne bar, but perhaps more impressive for the keen skier are the new version of the Strato ski, created exclusively for the hotel by the Rossignol racing workshop. The restaurant also excels, where the Michelin star chefs have created a Mediterranean inspired menu, plus desserts including reinterpretations of great classics like baked Alaska and Mont Blanc.

As well as the wealth of fine bars and restaurants, Courchevel 1850 offers a wide range of sporting activities in addition to the superb skiing. The resort has a 2 kilometre long sledging run with 300 metres of vertical drop, starting just near the Tovets lift opposite La Croissete and running down to Courcheval 1550, where you can join the bubble lift for a smooth ride back. If you want a different type of slide, try the excitement of a dog sled ride between Méribel and La Tania, approximately 40 minutes from La Résidence du Strato. For an even higher adrenalin-fuelled option, try a snowmobile, but if you prefer more tranquil pursuits, then a hot air balloon ride over Courchevel and Les Trois Vallées is perfect.

  • Best local fine dining restaurant – The Restaurant of Le Strato
  • Best casual restaurant – La Saulire offers a refined and delicate cuisine with the house speciality being a celebration of the black truffle
  • Best restaurant for lunch – La Soucoupe on the ski slopes specialise in finest grilled meats accompanied by a fine selection of wines and champagnes
  • Best patisserie – You are spoilt for choice in the area, but why not try Maison Braissand either an energy boost for the slopes or a well earned reward for a day on the piste
  • Best place for a sundowner – Altiport – yes you read that correctly – the views are so amazing in this part of the world, that we can recommend an airport for your sundowner … the real reason though is that you are a fan of the big screen, you will recognise the airport from the opening scenes of the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies and it is worth a visit for that alone.
  • Best local bar – Le Bal has been described as feeling like home, but having a party atmosphere every night of the week, so if that sounds like your home then this is the place for you
  • Best nightclub – La Mangeoire has a lounge area where you can relax and enjoy live music with varying genres For more of a club scene, try Le Coyotte
  • Best place for a picnic – On the slopes – so many lovely spots with stunning views
  • Notable local cultural events , festivals or celebrations – Women Ski World Cup in mid-December
  • Must see – You cannot miss the scenery, but if you want something a little more man-made, then Le Cap Horn is something of a Courchevel institution – if you dream of enjoying seafood at an altitude of 2000 metres whilst not actually in a plane, then give it a try – it doesn’t come cheap, but there can be few better places for people-watching.
  • Must do – Ski Vol for balloon flights and ski mobile experiences that will live long in the memory
  • Must try – There are burgers and then there are Le Strato burgers – this offering from the Le Strato Restaurant adjacent to La Résidence may not sound that exciting, but trust us, you have to try it.
  • Hidden secret – The Ledge, a memorable 5 kilometre long slope
  • Best time to visit for the weather – March
  • Best time to visit to avoid the crowds – 11 January to 8 February, or 15 March to 6 April
