Private Residences by Small Luxury Hotels of the World

Mexico, Zihuatanejo El Ensueño

In one of the most beautiful Pacific Coast villages of southern Mexico

This four bedroom suite is set on one floor and covers an area of 1,395 square metres. Each suite has its own plunge pool and private terrace, with the master Inspiracion Suite even having its own private access to the beach. The outside living and dining area is perfect for entertaining or your own special meal prepared by your personal chef. El Ensueño is in the grounds of sister SLH property La Casa Que Canta, so you can make full use of their excellent spa and restaurants.  more...

As well as the gorgeous weather with the region boasting 340 days of clear skies and sunny days every year, food is another fundamental part of the local culture. Zihuatenejo is a colourful fishing town, so a walk down what is known as the Fishing Passage is highly recommended, where you can see fisherman taking out the catch of the day and the produce makes it from sea to chef to plate in a matter of minutes. You must try fish or shrimp Tiritas, which is seafood usually prepared with green chilli, red onion, coriander and lime juice. In the evening, you might want to top this off with a Mezcalini cocktail – a combination of Mezcal and Martini but with many variations from local bars – some have basil syrup, jalapeño syrup, pretty much all have lime and all are always served with a smile.

If sun and food are key features of the area, then two others have to be sea and sand. The famous beaches have soft sand and transparent waters surrounded by beautiful green hills. If you go to Las Gatas, take a snorkel and mask as there are some excellent spots just off the beach. You can walk to Playa Manzanillo, but far better to hire a boat which your concierge will be happy to arrange. La Ropa is right by your villa, stretches for almost 3 kilometres and with its usual gentle waves, is generally perfect for swimming.

  • Best local fine dining restaurant – If you want something close to your villa, try Mar & Cielo restaurant at La Casa Que Canta http://www.lacasaquecanta.com/cuisine.php
  • Best casual restaurant – Bistro del Mar at La Madera beach. Good location right by the beach and a great selection of local specialities including the simple but taste tingling mango tachos http://www.bistrodelmar.com/
  • Best restaurant for lunch – La Terraza restaurant at La Casa Que Canta http://www.lacasaquecanta.com/cuisine.php, good location, excellent food and service.
  • Best patisserie – This area does not really have a strong patisserie tradition, but if you have a sweet tooth then try the fresh fruit non-alcoholic cocktails.
  • Best place for a sundowner – The terrace of your villa with friends and family – great view, great company
  • Best local bar – Bandidos Bar http://www.bandidosdezihua.com/ or Luz de luna Bar at La Casa Que Canta http://www.lacasaquecanta.com/bar.php
  • Best nightclub – This is not really a nighclub sort of a place, but the bars in Zihua often have live music. There are a few more places with dance floors in Ixtapa about 10 kilometres up the coast, but few want to go beyond the lovely relaxed atmosphere of Zihuatanejo Bay.
  • Best place for a picnic – Las Gatas or Manzanillo beach. If you go to Las Gatas, take a snorkel and mask as there are some excellent spots just off the beach. You can walk to Playa Manzanillo, but far better to hire a boat which your concierge will be happy to arrange.
  • Notable local cultural events, festivals or celebrations – Guitar festival – dubbed as ‘Strings, Sand and Sunsets’, the Zihuatanejo International Guitar Festival held in March is well worth a visit http://www.zihuafest.info/venues-schedule/. The fishing in the area is very good and you can charter a boat or if you are really keen watch out for one of the many small fising tournaments.
  • Must see – The conservation efforts to protect the population of sea turtles, particularly Pacific Ridley Sea Turtle but also some Leatherback and Hawksbill, is a feature of the area. Playa Blanca is one of the main areas where the baby turtles are released and is a great thing to watch and support.
  • Must do – Barra de Potosi, for kayak and bird watching, located at the southern end of the vast Playa Larga.
  • Must try – You must try fish or shrimp Tiritas, which is seafood usually prepared with green chilli, red onion, coriander (cilantro) and lime juice. Top this off with a Mezcalini cocktail – a combination of Mezcal and Martini but with many variations from local bars – some have basil syrup, jalapeño syrup and pretty much all have lime
  • Hidden secret – Not hidden, but actually quite the opposite – people watching in Zihuatanejo Bay. Walk along the playa towards the small marina and there are many cafes and boutiques to entice you. Pick your spot and watch the gentle amble of people pass by. From morning to night there is always something to see and do.
  • Best time to visit for the weather – Winter and Spring, December to March
  • Best time to visit to avoid the crowds – September to November
