Austria, Stuben am Arlberg House Hannes Schneider

Beautifully stylish Alpine townhouse with a delightful blend of the original and modern

This Alpine townhouse is the former home of the man often referred to in the US as “the father of modern skiing”, Hannes Schneider, legendary ski instructor and star of groundbreaking ski films from the 1920s and 30s. The original house dates back to the mid 19th century and retains many original features such as the aged woods and natural stone, but with more than a nod to modern comforts with a Sonos sound system, Apple TV and its own cinema.  The service is also impeccable and thoroughly modern, exactly what you would expect as House Hannes Schneider is co-owned by Gertrud Schneider, owner of SLH big sister luxury hotel Kristiania Lech.

Located in Stuben, one of the original Arlberg villages, this a perfect spot from which to hike in the summer, with stunning mountain views in every direction. But perhaps when the village really comes alive, is the winter when you can ski right to the chalet from the Albona ski area (300 metres from the ski lift to the property) and offering some of the best powder skiing in the Alps. With a state-of-the-art gondola open for the 2016/17 season, finally the ski areas of Lech and St Anton’s are connected via Stuben. With 146 km of blue runs, 147 km of Red and 55 km of Black, there is plenty to keep the most ardent of skiers busy. For those looking for something a little different, there is also off piste skiing, snowshoeing, freeriding and even heliskiing.

On your return to the house, you are always guaranteed a warm welcome, with delicious home-baked cakes served with tea and coffee. If you prefer, you can opt for something savoury and your private chef will be happy to oblige. Then take advantage of the house’s spa with hot tub, massage and bio-sauna, with a swimming pool and gym to be added in the converted barn this coming summer. Champagne and canapés ae served each evening, followed by your three course dinner accompanied by a selection of the finest Austrian house wines. Indulgent? Maybe. Relaxing home-from-home hospitality …. always.
