Latvia, Kandava Rumene Manor

Country retreat that is a triumph of restoration and reconstruction

The estate is located just outside the charming old hilltop village of Kandava and Rumene Manor is the 5 suite country retreat, belonging to the owners of SLH sister property Hotel Bergs in Riga. The original house was designed by architect Teodors Zeilers for the von Düsterlohe family and construction started in 1876, taking 16 years to complete. When the current owners bought the estate, the house was in ruins, so they commissioned architect Zaiga Gaile to bring the house back to life. Through a masterful combination of reconstruction and restoration, she has not merely recreated the 19th century manor house, but rather reinvented it for the 21st century.  more...

The craftsmanship at Rumene is wonderful and every effort has been made to retain as many original features as possible both from this site and others in the area, including reclaimed tile stoves, huge Carrara marble sink tops, rare gypsum panelling, recycled bricks and parquet flooring. The theme throughout the house blends white and wood, which helps to maximize the light in winter, whilst on long summer evenings creates a serene glow.

The décor is exquisite throughout with some of the highlights to be found in the ballroom with its two impressive bas-reliefs created by the Latvian sculptor Gustavs Skilters, the glazed tile fireplace and beautiful Rud-Ibach-Sohn piano. The sunny veranda is another of many highlights with its white sofas and tiled floors opening via French doors onto a summer terrace where meals are served on warm evenings. The neo-Renaisance terraced stairway then descends to the lake, lawns and park providing a spectacular setting.

The nearby village of Kadava dates back to 1230 and the cobblestone streets have changed little over hundreds of years. Close by are the fortified castles of Edole and Slobenbeka and the town of Sabuile boasts the World’s most northerly open air vineyard, where the majority of grapes grown is the Zilga, specially developed by the Latvian sectionist Pauls Sukatnieks. For nature lovers the beautiful Abava Valley with its forests and wild flowers is not to be missed. The prisitinge white sand beaches between Liepaja and Ventspils are less than 2 hours away and whilst there, you must try the smoked fish for which they are famous. Rumene Manor estate itself has over 7 hectares of parkland perfect for riding and even integrates its own 9 hole golf course.

  • Best local fine dining restaurant – You can always arrange a gourmet meal from the exquisite Hotel Bergs Restaurant, but if you fancy going out for an occasion then the nearby Kukšu Manor will do the job of helping you celebrate with a fine dining in an intimate local ambiance http://www.kuksumuiza.lv/en/kuksu-muiza/restaurant.html
  • Best casual restaurant – For a casual and simpler meal our kitchen will serve you either in the manor itself or you can have a nice meal set up on the fabulous terrace overlooking the park and the water. ‘’Martinelli’’ in the nearby town Talsi will serve you a casual meal outside on the terrace or by the fire place with a selected glass of wine from their own wine collection http://www.martinelli.lv/
  • Best restaurant for lunch – Lunch again can be served in our garden or manor cooked by our experienced chefs, turning the simplest dish into a gastronomic masterpiece. Or you can sense a little bit of Italy in Kuldīga, where the authentic Italian pizzeria called ‘’Goldingen Room’’ can be found in the streets of the Old town https://www.facebook.com/goldingenroom
  • Best patisserie – You can indulge into organic pastries made by the local bakeries and only the freshest ingredients in the nearby Kandava town, such as Levina café and bakery – try their Pierogi which are a type of dumpling of unleavened dough with fillings as varied as your imagination from sweet to savoury – perhaps the closest similarities are the British pasty (although pierogi are much smaller), Latin empanadas or Oriental jiaozi.
  • Best place for a sundowner – The sundown is always spectacular from any angle in Rumene Manor’s own park or if you prefer a trip to the coast is less than 50 km where you can see the sun descending across the water, colouring the sky in every shade of the dusk.
  • Best local bar – As the manor is set out in the countryside, most people stay on the property and enjoy the opportunity to have the bartender serve them whatever beverage they desire.
  • Best nightlife – This part of Latvia is peaceful and embraces the calm and romantic countryside ambiance but if you choose to spend a night differently then dancing your heart out on the dance floor in one of Riga's best clubs is about an hour ride away. For great food and good music try http://www.aqualuna.lv/. For a lively dance club try http://www.firstdacha.com/. If what you are looking for is more of a cocktail bar, then try Bar XIII http://bar13.lv/en/
  • Best place for a picnic – The 17 acres of park next to the manor stretching along the lake and is surrounded by the beauty and charm of the Latvian countryside – the perfect spot for a picnic.
  • Notable local cultural events, festivals or celebrations – It has become a tradition now once a year to celebrate the welcoming of spring with a Masquerade Ball at The Rumene Manor. We also organize a special gourmet dinner twice a year with a seasonal menu made up from the components from local farms and producers where our guest can dine, wine and celebrate with a special guest of honour, usually well known celebrity. There is also a wine festival in the nearby Sabile town, offering a chance to celebrate life while enjoying the wine produced by local wineries – one of them being a renowned family establishment called ‘’Abavas’’ who also offer degustation and excursions with a view over the Abava valley.  Every spring Kuldīga hosts a festival called "Lido Zivis" which literally translates into "Fish Fly" where fish are jumping during the spring tide in the Venta rapid.  Every summer Kuldīga is celebrating – for three days the streets are filled with people with music, food, markets and performances in honour of the town's annual celebration.  Many towns in the Kurzeme region have local celebrations every summer, typically on the second week of July, all the villages and towns by the seaside celebrate the sea by having special parades and concerts.  One of these celebrations stands out with special ambiance and it is Pāvilosta – famous for its water sport activities and good wind for surfers and kite boarders.  More information can be found on the town website http://www.pavilosta.lv/en and region website http://www.kurzeme.lv/en/
  • Must see – Kuldīga in western Latvia and less than an hour away, which has the widest rapids in Europe, stretching 249 metres wide across the Venta river. http://www.latvia.travel/en/sight/venta-waterfall  The town has its historical charm where you can walk through the old town whilst also visiting nice cafés and casual restaurants.

Open-air art museum at Pedvāle conceptually integrates the artistic and cultural heritage and the natural setting into a unified whole giving the chance for its guest to have a unique experience whilst enjoying the beautiful Latvian nature http://www.pedvale.lv/?l=1

When talking about nature, the steep banks of Jūrkalne by The Baltic Sea is a magnificent creation of nature where there are breathtaking views over the wild sea and forests right beside it. Not far from there, in the heart of Ventspils, is the 13th century Castle of The Livonian Order, which is the oldest preserved building in the city also hosting the best restaurant in town http://muzejs.ventspils.lv/en/the-castle-of-the-livonian-order/
  • Must do – take advantage of the nearby airfield which is home of the Baltic Bees.  It allows you to experience an acrobatic flight with a reactive jet which is certainly a once in a lifetime experience http://balticbees.com/en
  • Must try – Sabile Wine hill is a unique spot that is home to the only wineries in the country. It is listed in the Guinness World Record book as the world's most northern open-air vineyard http://www.latvia.travel/en/sight/sabile-wine-hill

There in the family distillery "Abavas" you have the great opportunity to taste the locally produced wine. In any of the bakeries in the area you will have to try the local sweet whose historical recipe is even protected by the EU, that's called sklandu rausis and it is made from rye, carrots and potatoes. If you enjoy beer then Užava brewery is located 27 km outside Ventspils where you can try the freshly brewed beer and as well as have the chance to go through the steps of beer making itself http://www.uzavasalus.eu/

Another unique thing to try only in spring will be the fresh maple and birch sap collected only at the break of winter and spring when the sap moves intensively. The juice is incredibly rich in vitamins and very popular in the northern regions. Nowadays it is even produced as a base for many lemonades and even sparkling wine.
  • Hidden secret – Take a stroll through our beautiful hiking trail around the lake or find a quiet moment while watching birds over the lake from the nearby tower. Every corner of the park has its details that our guests can turn into their private ambiance, for example a revitalizing early morning or late night swim in the lake with a mysterious source of energy floating from the lake in those hours.  Another unique opportunity for nature lovers is very distinctive courtship ritual of the black grouse and wood grouse, which happens in the Spring and is known as a lek.
  • Best time to visit for the weather – May, June and July
  • Best time to visit to avoid the crowds – November, February and March
