Private Residences by Small Luxury Hotels of the World

Italy, Lake Como Villa Amina

Set on the shores of one of the world’s most beautiful lakes

The estate reflects the culture, opera and theatre associated with its former owner, opera singer Giuditta Pasta. This heritage is reflected in the name Villa Amina, which is the lead female role in Vincenzo Bellini’s opera semiseria ‘La Sonnambula’. This one suite villa covers an area of 140 square metres, with 80 of that being the magnificent bedroom with floor to ceiling windows and a large round bathtub overlooking the lake. Downstairs is a living room and dining area with full kitchen and the whole building is encased in 16,000 year old oak from New Zealand found, perfectly preserved on a river bed.

The villa is set in the six-and-a-half acre lakeside estate of big sister SLH property CastaDiva Resort and Spa and as such, as well as the privacy of your own private residence, all the resort facilities are also available should you wish to use them. There is a superb spa, with salt room built from Himalayan pink salt; the Orangerie restaurant offering wonderful Italian flavours with an emphasis on local traditions and seasonal produce; Bellini Bar with outdoor terrace; and a real favourite is the nightly fountain and light show at the swimming pool, floating on the lake.

Every visitor is drawn to discover the romance of Lake Como and to explore the villages along the shore either by boat or car. Your concierge will be happy to arrange either, or even a float plane for an amazing view of the lake and valley beyond. As well as the estate grounds, the local area is well noted for its fascinating gardens, none more so than Villa Carlotta with its beautiful displays and art masterpieces spread over 70,000 square metres. The gardens chiefly owe their reputation to the spring flowering rhododendrons and azaleas of which there are more than 150 varieties, although it is well worth a visit at any time of year because of the stands of ancient sequoia and cedar, the Rock Garden, Bamboo Garden and Fern Valley. The area is equally well served in the arts, and a visit to Teatro Sociale di Como, which
celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2013, is highly recommended.

In case you were wondering, the difference between gelato and ice cream is pretty complex, but at its most basic level, gelato is more silky and smooth and this is because it tends to have less fat in the base as it uses more milk than cream and is churned at lower speeds in production, so has less air in it.
