France, Les Baux de Provence Villa Domaine de Manville

Beautiful villa right by the golf course in the heart of the Provence Alpilles

Villa Domaine de Manville is a three bedroom, 220 square metres residence, set in the 100 hectare grounds of SLH sister property Domaine de Manville with all its wonderful facilities at your disposal and on the edge of the golf course. This is a small complex of nine villas, which other than a shared swimming pool, are completely private. The stone walls and red-tiled roofs are in typical Provencal style but with a chic contemporary design, featuring stunning atrium windows framing the beautiful views, large sitting room with fireplace, dining room and kitchen.  more...

Owners Patrick and Edith Saut’s roots are firmly in the region and having left the area many years ago, there was always a strong urge drawing them back – “when we discovered Manville, we knew this was the place. Everything was here: the architecture, the local products and the food – all we had to do was work with them. This is our home and we want our guests to feel this is their home too..”.

The villa nestles beside the character-filled, Thierry Sprecher designed, 18 hole golf course. This is a protected area, so it was vital that the course was environmentally-friendly. The solution was to embed the course in the landscape and as well as using a few well placed more traditional hazards such as bunkers, this works with the landscape using old stone walls, the olive groves and ponds to protect the pins. Brand new, yet timeless – the course has proved to be very popular with players.

If golf, the adjacent spa, vineyards and beautiful village does not soak up all your time, then this area is rich with opportunities. Within an easy driving day’s outing are some of Provence’s most enduring sights: Arles, Avignon, the Camargue, Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, the villages of the Luberon, Saint-Rémy de Provence and the many market towns of the region – all have a great deal to offer. Be sure to try some of the local delicacies including almond-flavoured calissons, candied fruit and honey nougat.

  • Best local fine dining restaurant – There are many superb restaurants in the region, but why look further than the restaurant at Domain de Manville? Chef Steve Deconinck, formerly of the Michelin-starred Chez Bru at Eygalières, has worked with culinary luminaries Ferran Adrià and Mark Veyrat. The speciality is Provençal food with a modern style, based on local produce with low food miles from producer to plate. Inspiration is drawn from the area and the menus are written according to what is on the stalls of the local market, what is in season on the estate and what is bought by local suppliers. Look out for dishes incorporating rosemary honey, produced on site using honey from the estate’s own hives.
  • Best casual restaurant – Aux Ateliers in Maussane – having gained Michelin stars at a number of restaurants in France, Franck Dumont, the chef and owner, opened Aux Ateliers with his wife, Flo, in the summer of 2014. This is fine and simple dining, never more apparent than when you are invited to go in to the wine room to handpick your bottle of choice from the offerings from dozens of local vineyards as well as a few from further afield.
  • Best restaurant for lunch – Café de la Fontaine in Maussane – simple and tasty French food and if the fig tart is on the menu on the day you visit, then you just have to try it – delicious http://www.lecafedelafontaine.com/
  • Best patisserie – De Moro, the Artisan boulangerie-pâtisserie in St Martin de Crau.
  • Best place for a sundowner – The top of the 3 kilometre long health trail, with stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
  • Best local bar – Le Bar at Domaine de Manville.
  • Best nightclub – La Galine in Saint-Rémy de Provence http://www.club-dj.fr/discotheque/13/galine-saint-remy-de-provence.php
  • Best place for a picnic – The olive grove or the vineyard.
  • Notable local cultural events, festivals or celebrations – Festival d’Avignon in October http://www.festival-avignon.com/en/, Festival photo Arles from July each year http://www.rencontres-arles.com, Cathédrale d’images in Les Baux de Provence http://cathedrale-images.com a depictions of impressionist paintings in constant motion on the the massive white stone walls.
  • Must see – The village and ruined castle of Les Baux de Provence.
  • Must do – Visit the local farmers markets.
  • Must try – Calissons, which are traditional French delicacy consisting of a smooth paste of candied fruit ground almonds topped with a thin layer of icing. The Confiserie Lilamand is in Saint-Rémy de Provence, only 11 kilometres away http://www.confiserie-lilamand.com/en/calissons. Alternatively why not try one of the hotel’s electric bikes, or try an olive and wine tasting.
  • Hidden secret – The owners have 30 beehives on the health trail, producing the estates own honey.
  • Best time to visit for the weather – From March to October.
